Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, one of my goals was to move to “the city” and live in an authentic brick loft. Now, I am in Atlanta, the “city of the south”, and 23 years later, these classic residential spaces still make me swoon. Take a look and be inspired!

DEFINITION: A large, open floor space over a factory, warehouse, or other commercial or industrial space; such a floor converted into an apartment or artist’s studio; an open space under a roof; an attic or garret.

Lofts are classic urban living spaces that many times have provocative features – exposed brick, piping, wood, concrete, large glass windows, granite and steel. Lofts are usually built from former industrial buildings. When industrial developments are developed into condominiums instead of apartments, they may be called loft condominiums. Originally popular with artists, they are now highly sought-after by others. Hard” Lofts

What we consider to be a real loft (hard loft) in it’s truest form, which most regard as the only kind of loft, is typically a conversion of an old warehouse or factory industrial building. The term “hard” is derived from the fact that the interior of such space having a harder, more rugged material such as that of concrete construction, exposed brick, heating ducts and, in some cases plumbing pipes as well as original wood posts, beams and floors. Authentic details and atmosphere is everything for a hard loft.

Ceilings are at least ten feet high but are typically higher. Ah, but high ceilings does not a hard loft make. Ceiling height is becoming increasingly more important for loft purchasers, and therefore developers are now building condos with slightly higher ceilings than in the past. The ceiling height is what helps give a hard loft the feeling of having an open concept and spacious living space. Large windows and open floor plans also help to achieve this desired effect.

These newer, modern residential spaces some of the characteristics of a hard loft such as high ceilings, big windows and open concept floor plans, but what makes them “soft” is the absence of visible drywall, lack of exposed ducts and plumbing, carpet in some areas and upscale kitchens or baths. Soft lofts have more in common with traditional condominiums than a true hard loft.

I LOVE LEOPARD – Leopard clothes, accessories, shoes, etc. But one of my favorite places to spot leopard print (pun intended) is in the home. There is something about leopard that is chic and timeless. Here are a few pics for your viewing pleasure. Sources are included with the images. Be inspired! Feel free to share these posts on any of your social media pages. BE INSPIRED!

I personally love bright and bold colors, noticeable prints, patterns, etc. BUT there is something special about the striking contrast of black and white. It is timeless, classic, and just plain beautiful. So, for those who prefer less color, but still want to make an impact, here are a few inspirational pics (with sources) just for you. BE INSPIRED!

Pantone’s 2016 Colors Of the Year

Introducing Pantone’s 2016 Colors of the Year: ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY

Pantone 2016 Colors - Rose Quartz, Serenity

Excerpt taken from:

PANTONE 13-1520 & PANTONE 15-3919

“A softer take on color for 2016: For the first time, the blending of two shades – Rose Quartz and Serenity are chosen as the PANTONE Color of the Year

As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.

The prevalent combination of Rose Quartz and Serenity also challenges traditional perceptions of color association.

In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”

One of My (Many) Styling Obsessions: GARDEN STOOLS!!!!

I am considering doing a style series on different design “obsessions”. What are some of your favorite décor pieces?

Stool Collage

I LOVE CERAMIC GARDEN STOOLS!!! I would love to have one in every room in my townhouse! They are chic, elegant, and universal. You can use them in place of nightstands, side / end tables, footstools, or just for pure aesthetic impact. They are available in all colors, styles, patterns, and materials, and the best part is: the price range!!!! I have seen garden stools as inexpensive as $40 – $60. The most expensive stool I came across was around $1,000.

Originating from China, these stools were traditionally used in gardens, dating back 1,000 years. Chinese homes were built around a courtyard, so outdoor furniture was essential. Eventually, these garden stools were used both indoors and outdoors as casual seating. Indoor stools were typically portable and made out of wood, while outdoor furniture, needing to withstand the elements, was created with stone, glazed stoneware, or porcelain.

Garden stools have been exported to the West for about 300 years, but it has only been since the mid-20th century that they have gained such popularity in the American interior design field. And with so many ways to style them in your home, I have a strong feeling that garden stools will be a popular design choice for years to come.
